Allow screen capture.

If Skitchlet can open an image but cannot capture your screen, check macOS permission for the copy you are actually running. This guide applies to the Skitchlet v0.3.0 release.

Enable the installed app

  1. Open Skitchlet from Applications. Save or export any current work before quitting or switching copies.
  2. Choose File → Screenshot Setup…, then Open Settings…. Or open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  3. Find Screen & System Audio Recording, called Screen Recording on older macOS versions, and enable Skitchlet’s screen-recording access. Skitchlet uses that permission to take the area screenshot you select.
  4. If Skitchlet is missing, use the + button to add /Applications/Skitchlet.app. The setup panel’s Show in Finder helps identify the running app.
  5. Return to Skitchlet and choose Check Again or start Capture. If macOS asks you to reopen the app, preserve your current image, quit, and open the installed copy again.

macOS controls whether permission is granted. Apple documents the setting and app-addition flow in Control access to screen and system audio recording. Labels can vary with your macOS version.

Already enabled?

Two apps can have the same visible name. A preview in Downloads, a local build, and the installed app can have different identities, so a permission entry for one may not authorize another.

In Screenshot Setup, choose Show in Finder to locate the running copy. In macOS’s permission list, right-click Skitchlet and choose Show in Finder when available. If they point at different copies, quit the unwanted one and use + to add the installed app. Reopen /Applications/Skitchlet.app and try again.

You can still open, paste, and annotate existing images without Screen Recording access. Skitchlet does not need Accessibility or Input Monitoring permission for its capture shortcut.

Try the Capture button

If ⌘⇧2 does nothing, first use the editor’s Capture button or File → Capture Area…. If that works, another app may have reserved the shortcut. Skitchlet must remain running for its global shortcut to work, and this release uses a fixed shortcut.

Closing the editor does not quit Skitchlet. Use its menu bar icon, the Dock icon, or Window → Show Editor to return to it. Escape cancels an active capture selection without changing the current image.

Still stuck?

Contact support with your macOS version, Skitchlet version, the running app’s location, and whether Capture works from the File menu. You do not need to send a private screenshot to describe a permission problem.

Once capture works, follow Capture. Mark. Share. for annotation and export.
